Turning 40 is a significant milestone in one’s life, and what better way to celebrate it than with a special birthday trip? I chose the enchanting Gold Coast, Australia, to mark this momentous occasion and recharge my spirits. This coastal city had always intrigued me with its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and diverse cuisine. What I experienced during my trip exceeded my expectations in every way. The calm atmosphere, delectable food, warm-hearted locals, and an unforgettable encounter with Emily, a koala bear at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, made this trip a birthday to remember.
A Tranquil Haven and a Smooth Journey
The Gold Coast is renowned for its lively energy and bustling tourist attractions, but to my surprise, it also offered moments of tranquility and relaxation. My decision to visit during the off-peak season allowed me to experience a quieter, more serene version of this beautiful city. The peacefulness was just what I needed to reflect on the past and prepare for the future. Walking along the pristine beaches with the gentle sound of the waves in the background was an absolute delight. The calming effect of the city was one of the best gifts I could give myself for my 40th birthday.
Our journey began with a smooth flight on Air New Zealand, which I would highly recommend. The airline provided exceptional service, and the 14-hour flight from our home to New Zealand passed without a hitch. A 3-hour layover allowed us to take advantage of the business lounge, stretch our legs and enjoy some delightful New Zealand cuisine. We then embarked on a short 3-hour flight to the Gold Coast, where the anticipation of my 40th birthday adventure grew with every mile.
The Star Grand Hotel: A Touch of Vegas in Australia
Upon our arrival, we checked into the Star Grand Hotel, which is connected to two other hotels and boasts an adjacent casino. The hotel’s opulence and elegance reminded us of a smaller, more intimate version of the grand hotels you’d find in Las Vegas. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we knew we were in for a luxurious and unforgettable experience.
The Star Grand Hotel not only offered us a comfortable and stylish place to rest our heads but also a perfect location within the city. The surrounding areas were bustling with vibrant nightlife and entertainment options, and the casino right on our doorstep added an extra touch of excitement to our stay.
Meeting a Koala at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. As an animal lover, I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday gift than the chance to hold a koala bear. These iconic Australian creatures are simply enchanting, and I was overjoyed to get up close and personal with one. I’m so thankful my husband doesn’t mind my little adventures!
The sanctuary’s mission to protect and rehabilitate native wildlife was evident, and the opportunity to learn about Australia’s unique fauna was a captivating experience.
Culinary Delights
One of the most unexpected and delightful discoveries during my trip to the Gold Coast was the remarkable culinary scene. The city’s diverse population and rich cultural mix result in a food lover’s paradise. From mouthwatering seafood to exotic Asian cuisine, the Gold Coast has it all. I was particularly impressed with the freshness of the ingredients and the creativity of the chefs.
I enjoyed countless delicious meals at various restaurants and food markets. One standout experience was indulging in a sumptuous seafood platter while overlooking the sun setting over the ocean at Rick Shores. It was a perfect way to celebrate my special day, and the memory of those flavorsome dishes still lingers on my taste buds.

The Gold Coast isn’t just famous for its natural beauty; it’s also renowned for its warm and welcoming people. During my stay, I encountered locals who went above and beyond to make my trip memorable. Whether it was a friendly conversation with a shop owner, a helpful suggestion from a passerby, or a genuine birthday wish from a stranger, the kindness of the Gold Coast residents left a lasting impression.
